The women asylum seekers and residents of the MdM Greece “A Step Forward” Open Accommodation Centre for Women, presented their own message against violence towards women, which remains the most widespread violation of human rights.
Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the women used collages, photographs, and other crafts to convey messages of equality, rights advocacy, freedom, and the elimination of all forms of violence. Through their creative expressions, they shared their personal stories, reflecting the journeys that led them to the path of involuntary displacement.
The exhibition was honoured by the presence of the Ambassador of Switzerland to Greece, Stefan Estermann, the Deputy Head of Mission of Switzerland, Aita Pult, the Head of Swiss Contribution Office in Greece, Tobias Schlaepfer, and the Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum, Sofia Voultepsi, alongside representatives from the General Secretariat for Vulnerable Citizens and Institutional Protection.
During a heartfelt discussion on the significance of the project’s empowering initiatives and its role in fostering independence among the women residing at the Open Accommodation Centre, participants highlighted its profound impact on enhancing the resilience of women and mothers with their children. The project provides a safe space for them to lay the groundwork for a brighter future and take the decisive Step Forward.
Mr. Estermann expressed his pride in the accomplishments of A Step Forward and his satisfaction for the Embassy of Switzerland’s support for its operations. “In this way, we can make a meaningful contribution to the protection of women,” he stated. Furthermore, Ms. Voultepsi highlighted the significant value of the project in supporting women’s social integration and empowerment.
